During the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, great new trends of Jewish thought emerged whose widely varied representatives--Kabbalists, philosophers, and astrologers--each claimed that their particular understanding revealed the actual secret of the Torah. They presented their own readings in a coded fashion that has come to be regarded by many as the very essence of esotericism. Concealment and Revelation takes us on a fascinating journey to the depths of the esoteric imagination. Carefully tracing the rise of esotericism and its function in medieval Jewish thought, Moshe Halbertal's richly detailed historical and cultural analysis gradually builds conceptual-philosophical force to culminate in a masterful phenomenological taxonomy of esotericism and its paradoxes. Among the questions addressed: What are the internal justifications that esoteric traditions provide for their own existence, especially in the Jewish world, in which the spread of knowledge was of great importance? How do esoteric teachings coexist with the revealed tradition, and what is the relationship between the various esoteric teachings that compete with that revealed tradition? Halbertal concludes that, through the medium of the concealed, Jewish thinkers integrated into the heart of the Jewish tradition diverse cultural influences such as Aristotelianism, Neoplatonism, and Hermeticisims. And the creation of an added concealed layer, unregulated and open-ended, became the source of the most daring and radical interpretations of the tradition.

Le livre du rabbin venitien Leon de Modene, publie a Paris en version italienne en 1637 sous le titre de Historia de gli riti hebraici, presentait a un large public les rites et les coutumes des Juifs de son temps. Il prenait place dans tout un courant de redecouverte de l'Orient, des peuples etrangers et des religions non chretiennes. Pour assurer sa diffusion en France, le grand erudit et hebraisant Richard Simon en fit une traduction qu'il publia en 1674. Il la faisait preceder d'une preface ou il manifestait sa remarquable connaissance du judaisme et soulignait l'interet que, comme theologien et savant catholique, il portait au peuple juif. Pour combler les lacunes du livre du rabbin venitien, il joignait a sa traduction deux importants supplements, l'un consacre aux Caraites (Juifs qui s'appuyaient exclusivement sur l'ecriture et a ce titre lui paraissaient prefigurer les protestants), l'autre aux Samaritains. En 1681, Richard Simon reedita son livre et y ajouta une seconde partie ou il degageait les rapports de la doctrine et de la liturgie chretiennes avec le judaisme. C'est cette version complete qui est ici publiee.Comparer l'oeuvre de Leon de Modene et celle de l'oratorien francais permet de comprendre comment le public du XVIIe siecle connaissait le judaisme et comment un catholique cultive et d'esprit libre pensait les rapports entre les deux religions et les deux peuples. Leon de Modene est en effet un bon temoin de la facon dont les communautes juives se representaient elles-memes et se faisaient connaitre a l'exterieur; quant a Richard Simon, au dela des questions theologiques et liturgiques, il manifestait pour les coutumes juives une curiosite quasi ethnographique, annoncant, dans le catholicisme meme, un etat d'esprit appele a se developper considerablement.
